The Grotto first came into being during the 2010–11 school year, when several senior Catholic women lived in the light blue house at 198 Union Street and gave it its name. The idea of turning the house into a campus ministry home began to percolate, and in the summer of 2012, St. Anthony’s purchased the house. In the summer of 2013, the first fulltime ministry couple moved in—along with Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament!

In the years since, four alumni couples have directed campus ministry for St. Anthony’s. With their beautiful children, they have lived at The Grotto and been present daily to organize and host events, lead communal prayer, and support and encourage the students in living out their Catholic faith.

In addition to God’s grace, the generous support of parents, alumni, and even current students has enabled this ministry—funded entirely through donations to the parish—to flourish over the past decade.

The Grotto and Hillsdale College’s Catholic Society
The Grotto’s campus ministry directors and our pastor work closely with the student and faculty leadership of the official Hillsdale College student group, Catholic Society. However, The Grotto ministry is run completely by St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, independent of Hillsdale College (or the Catholic Society).
